PAINTINGS — details and reproductions

Each of my paintings is available as a custom matted and framed fine art reproduction.  Please write to me (see contact page) with inquiries or requests.  See the price list for details – prints are available in most of the same sizes as the photographs; the degree of enlargement possible may be limited for some.  I can also print on canvas and watercolor paper surfaces for fine art reproductions.

Improvisational Paintings

One of my favorite approaches to painting is to take a break from one project and use the same palette as a starting point for improvisation on small supports of either board or prepared museum board pieces left over from mat boards for my photographs.  A particular element usually catches my interest and provides a jumping-off point for further exploration and dialogue.  The final images are usually abstract, figurative, or scenic in nature.  These small pieces often provide me with ideas to explore in a larger format.

  • Point Of No Return, 2003 oil on canvas, 20” x 20” $600
This painting was inspired by a visit to the Civil War Battlefield at Antietam in August 2003. While not intended as a literal representation, the painting was influenced by the vivid, tragic stories my Civil War buff friends related as we looked out over the stark terrain.
  • Refuge, 2005 oil on board, 12” x 12 ” $275

  • Outside-In, 2006 acrylic on board, 16” x 20” $450
My studio at the Arlington Center for the Arts has very large windows at one end, with a northwest exposure and clear views of the horizon and sky above Spy Pond. I often witness spectacular sunsets and cloud formations. During a particularly intense time in my non-art work, I sought refuge in my studio and felt compelled to create a sort of fantastical skyscape as if viewed out my studio window, and as if all the activity in my mind took flight in bursts of color and texture, with the boundaries between outside and inside blurred.
  • Outcrop, 2005 oil on board, 6” x 6” $100
    scenic improvisation

    abstract improvisation
  • Catacombs, 2003 acrylic on canvas, 20” x 16” $450
This painting evolved in a very circuitous manner – I started out with a very different idea, became quite bogged down, almost gave up on it, and was finally able to let go of any preconceived idea and begin to play with the paint in larger fields of color. As shapes began to emerge, I was able to establish a sense of dialogue with the painting, and this carried me the final distance.

  • Still Life with Peaches and Grapes, 2002 oil on board, 12” x 12” $275
The Boston area endured a heat wave of 100-degree temperatures for several days in August 2002. We had no air conditioning, and when the indoors become unbearable, I set up my painting easel in the shade of my back yard, plugged a fan into the outdoor outlet, and did still life paintings for three days. This painting was the last of the series.

  • Afternoon Walk, 2005 oil on canvas, 40” x 30”, $1800
I was walking through the park at Thorndike Field in Arlington, MA, on a particularly beautiful fall day, enjoying the brilliant colors of the trees, when I saw a woman wearing black walking her black dog – they made a striking pair, backlit by the afternoon sun.
  • Carolyn, 2001 oil on canvas, 16” x 12” (private collection)
  • Premonition, 2002 oil on canvas, 20” x 10” $275
I am fascinated by reflected images in windows and water and love to photograph them. Modern glass office buildings are like huge canvasses filled with colorful collages of the surrounding terrain. One set of images from Phoenix gave me many ideas for paintings. I made black and white photocopies and isolated specific elements that were evocative to me – these became the basis for several paintings, including Ghosts, Premonition, Pulse, and Morning Tones. Working with these ideas led me to explore a more improvisatory process, and I love the creative spark that the serendipitous nature of reflections provides.

  • Searching, 2007 acrylic on paintboard, 12” x 12” $275
Searching grew out of months of exploration in several different forms: a continuing series of improvisatory line drawings, often as part of a daily art journal practice; a series of digital dabbles in Painter IX and X; and an ongoing series of improvisatory paintings in oil and acrylic. I recognized the desire to find a way to expand some of my line drawing ideas into paintings. I had also been waiting for the time when I finally felt ready to delve into a body of work that was part self-portrait in nature. Searching has shown me the beginnings of a new path that I look forward to exploring further.
